What we did in Karsiyaka

On May 7th and 8th, 2024, the vibrant community of Karşıyaka, İzmir, Turkey, came together for an onsite activity aimed at addressing local hazards, particularly the increasing threat of heatwaves

This event was marked by a diverse group of approximately 40 participants, including representatives from NGOs, academia, local government, first responders, and heritage experts.

The event began with a warm welcome and registration, setting a collaborative tone for the workshops and focus groups. Representatives from İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and Karşıyaka Municipality were present, highlighting the local government’s commitment to tackling environmental challenges. This inclusive gathering underscored the community’s dedication to enhancing resilience through shared knowledge and cooperation.

A key focus of the event was the pressing issue of heatwaves, a growing concern for the region. Participants engaged in various workshops designed to provide a platform for interactive learning and the exchange of best practices.

Additionally, focus groups facilitated in-depth discussions on specific aspects of local hazards, enabling participants to delve into detailed analyses. The presence of first responders and heritage experts ensured that the discussions were comprehensive and took into account both immediate responses and long-term preservation of the community’s cultural assets.

The collaborative efforts during these two days were a testament to the power of community engagement and scientific collaboration. The insights and strategies developed during the Karşıyaka onsite activities are expected to significantly enhance the community’s resilience to heatwaves and other local hazards.

Overall, the event was a resounding success, reflecting the community’s collective commitment to addressing environmental and societal challenges through cooperation, innovation, and proactive engagement.
